Urban Playground
Guimaraes, Portugal

Ideas competition Performance Architecture
The project participated in the competition announced on the occasion of Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012.
It aims to reuse the surface of the old Couros tanneries as a public space, a material and emotional place at the gates of the city center.
Simple wooden elements are superimposed on the granite tanks: platforms, trellises, and lanterns. The platforms make the tanks walkable surfaces. The trellises offer seating at different heights. The lanterns are light and mobile volumes, luminous at night and shading during the day.
An unusual urban playground is created. A prepared place, not overly designed, open to unexpected uses. Playground as a place of play and space for expression, music, acting.
The proposal did not win the competition, but in the following months, the municipality opened the tank area and created installations similar to those indicated in the project.
