Recovery of the former slaughterhouse to create a laboratory theater Frascati, Roma
The National Recovery and Resilience Plan, under “Urban Regeneration,” has made it possible to start the recovery of the former slaughterhouse, a strategic project for the city of Frascati. The structure is being regenerated as a multipurpose space and laboratory theater, with the aim of creating a new urban centrality, an attractive hub within walking distance of the historic center.. The renovated complex will be a space open to citizens, schools and associations in the area. The architectural design tends to respect the characters of the place and enhance the most significant existing artifacts. It maintains the morphological layout typical of urban facilities of this kind: an enclosure, with smaller volumes aligned along the perimeter to crown the central building. The main buildings are renovated, while the secondary ones, which are much deteriorated, are demolished and rebuilt. Emphasis is given to the stepped front and the metal structure of the overhead tracks, elements that characterize the architecture of the slaughterhouses. With the first stage of the work, a hall for about 100 seats, a multipurpose space and a cafeteria are completed. While the perimeter buildings that have not yet been reconstructed are marked on the ground by a garden dotted with olive trees. The new urban space may be completed with the construction of workshops-workshops in place of the green belt. The outdoor space is equipped with a stage for events and performances. With the activity of the theater, workshops and the new cafeteria, it will become a vital square. Consistent with NRRP guidelines, the renovated building complex will be an example of environmental sustainability.
